Things to Do in Chicago - December 2017

Chicago in December is an absolute winter wonderland. If you’ve decided to visit the city in December, you’ve made a fantastically festive choice. Our Concierge team has put together a list of their top 3 recommendations for Things to Do in Chicago this December.

Museum of Science & Industry’s Christmas Around the World

Through January 6 – Enjoy a one-of-a-kind seasonal celebration by joining the Museum of Science & Industry for Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light, a Chicago tradition that began with a single tree in 1942.

The museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage, surrounded by more than 50 smaller trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s different ethnic communities to represent their various cultures and holiday traditions.

Stroll through the trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow” and savor the performances on the Holiday Stage. School choral groups perform during the week, and a variety of ethnic song and dance performances take place on the weekends in conjunction with the exhibit.

The Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light exhibit are included in the Museum of Science and Industry general entry.

Catch a Show

Looking for an enriching and entertaining way to spend the holiday season? This year, celebrate yuletide at the theatre. Through December, Chicago is featuring both holiday and non-holiday inspired theater for exceptional entertainment.

Here are some of our Concierge recommended shows.

Hamilton | On an Open Run  | Private Bank Theatre

A new musical about the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America: Alexander Hamilton. From orphan to Washington’s right hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country’s first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy, Hamilton is an exploration of a political mastermind. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and lifelong Hamilton friend and foe, Aaron Burr, all attend this revolutionary tale of America’s fiery past told through the sounds of the ever-changing nation we’ve become.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas | Through December 31 | Broadway Playhouse

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas is a fantastic, slapstick holiday affair for all ages. When Santa Claus’ “Naughty or Nice” list goes missing, it’s up to a pair of dancing mice, a spunky girl, and an Elf-B-I agent to solve the mystery before Santa boards his sleigh.

Beautiful-The Carole King Musical | December 5 to January 28 | Cadillac Palace

Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Gobsmacked | December 5 to December 10 | Broadway Playhouse

Mind-blowing beatboxing, breathtaking harmonies and amazing arrangements of your favorite songs from the world’s best a cappella and beatboxing show – Gobsmacked! Direct from sell out seasons in London, Hong Kong and Edinburgh, this all-singing, all-beatboxing, all-awesome theatrical experience is sure to entertain.

Wicked | December 6 to January 21 | Oriental Theatre

A look at what happened in the Land of Oz… but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships… until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

Potted Potter | December 13 to January 7 | Broadway Playhouse

Playing to sold out houses all over the world, Potted Potter takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real life game of Quidditch) into seventy hilarious minutes. This fantastically funny show features all your favorite characters, a special appearance from a fire-breathing dragon, endless costumes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic!
